What is a keyword trigger?

It is the "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it" part of a Reel. You choose the word, say it in the video and the caption, and connect it to a message. Every comment that contains the keyword starts the same flow: a private reply in the fan's inbox, and optionally a short public reply under the comment so other viewers know it works. Comments without the keyword are left alone.

How matching works. Most tools match a keyword whether the fan types it in capitals or small letters, so GUIDE, guide and Guide all count. Some tools also catch typos and close variations, which helps when fans type in a hurry or in Hinglish. You can usually add several keywords to one automation, for example RECIPE and RECIPES, or a Hindi word next to the English one.

What makes a good keyword. Short, specific and easy to spell. One word is best. Avoid everyday words like "nice", "wow" or "love": fans write those anyway, and they would get a DM they never asked for. Give each Reel its own keyword so you can see which Reel brings the most DMs. For ideas, read our list of comment keyword ideas.

Rules to keep in mind. Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of it, so the first DM should carry the value. Meta's spam policy also rules out gating content behind likes or follows: you can invite the fan to follow, but send the freebie either way.

In theZio, you set keyword triggers on one post or on all posts, match them case-insensitively on every plan, and can give each keyword its own link or file. Pro adds smart match for typos and variations. See the beginner setup guide or the full comment-to-DM definition.

Example

ExampleFan comments RECIPE under a cooking Reel, and the keyword trigger sends them the recipe link by DM.

Questions people ask

Are Instagram keyword triggers case-sensitive?

Usually not. Most tools match GUIDE, guide and Guide alike, and some also catch typos and close variations.

What makes a good comment keyword?

A short, specific word that is easy to spell and that fans would not type by accident, such as GUIDE or RECIPE rather than nice or wow.
