What is a follower attribution?

Your follower count moves for many reasons at once: a Reel on Explore, a collab, a share in a group chat, an auto DM, and people unfollowing. Attribution asks a narrower question: how many of these new followers did this one thing bring? Without it, you cannot tell a Reel that grew your audience from one that only pleased the fans you already had.

There are three common ways to answer it. Instagram's own Insights list a follows metric per post and story in Meta's developer docs, which counts every path from that post, not only the DM. Your follower count is net, so unfollows hide part of the gain. And a simple count of fans who tapped through a follow invitation is inflated, because fans who already follow you tap through too.

theZio's follower growth report takes the strict route. When a fan reaches the follow invitation in an automation, theZio asks Instagram whether they follow you, and asks again when they reply. A fan counts as gained only when the answer changes from not following to following. Fans who were already following are shown as their own number, and account growth (net) sits next to new followers (gross), never as a share of it. Live counting starts the day the report is on for your account; earlier chats can show as an estimate, labelled as such in Analytics.

The invitation itself is Ask For Follow: a friendly line in the DM, one light reminder at most, and the freebie delivered whether the fan follows or not. Making the follow the price of the reward is the follow gate pattern, which Meta's spam policy warns against. Read the full guide: how many followers do your auto DMs bring.

Example

ExampleA Reel's automation shows +40 new followers and 110 already following, next to +25 account growth for the week.

Questions people ask

Why is my follower count lower than the followers my automation brought?

Your follower count is net: it subtracts everyone who unfollowed in the same period. Followers gained from an automation is gross and never goes down. Both can be true at once, so read them side by side rather than as a percentage.

Do fans who already followed me count as gained?

Not in theZio's follower growth report. Instagram is asked at the invitation, and a fan who was already following is shown as already following, never as a new follower.

Is the follower growth report on the Free plan?

Yes. The follower growth report and Ask For Follow are on every theZio plan.
