How many followers do your Instagram auto DMs bring? Measure it

You turned on "comment PLAN and I'll DM you", added a friendly line inviting fans to follow, and your Reel took off. Your follower count went up. But how much of that came from the DM, and how much would have happened anyway?
This post compares the ways you can answer that today: Instagram's own Insights, your follower count, a simple count of fans who passed a follow step, and theZio's follower growth report, which checks each fan with Instagram twice. theZio is our product, so this post also says where the other methods are the better pick. Meta details are as listed in Meta's developer docs, checked on 17 Oct 2026 and cited at the end.
How did we compare the ways to count followers from auto DMs?
Instagram details come from Meta's own developer documentation for the media insights and user profile APIs. theZio details come from how the report works in the product. We did not test other auto DM tools' dashboards, so the third method below is described as a counting method, not as any named tool.
How do Instagram Insights, your follower count and theZio count follows?
| Tool | What it counts | Separates fans who already followed? | Tied to the DM? | Gross or net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Insights (per post) | Follows linked to a post or story | Yes, it counts new follows | No, every path from the post counts | Gross |
| Your follower count | Total followers, day to day | Not applicable | No | Net (unfollows included) |
| Counting every fan past a follow step | Fans who reached or passed the follow invitation | No | Yes | Gross, inflated by existing followers |
| theZio follower growth report (ours) | Fans not following at the invitation and following when checked again | Yes, shown separately | Yes | Gross, shown next to net account growth |
Method by method: where each one is the better pick
Instagram Insights
Meta's media insights docs list a follows metric for posts and stories, and a profile activity metric for what people do on your profile after engaging with a post. It is free and needs no tool. But it counts every follow linked to the post, from the Reel itself, Explore, a share or the DM, and the docs do not describe how a follow is matched to a post. Better pick if you want the total pull of one Reel, whatever the path.
Your follower count
The number on your profile is the simplest signal and the one brands look at. It is net: a day with 300 new followers and 120 unfollows shows +180. A spike after a viral Reel tells you the Reel worked. It cannot tell you which part. Better pick if you care about overall audience size, not attribution.
Counting every fan past a follow step
Some setups simply count each fan who tapped through the follow invitation. It is easy to build, and it is tied to the DM. The catch: a fan who already followed you also taps through, so the number mixes old fans with new ones. On an account where most commenters already follow you, it can look several times bigger than the real gain. Better pick if you only need a rough engagement signal for the follow step itself.
theZio's follower growth report
theZio asks Instagram about each fan twice and counts a follow only when the answer changes. It shows fans who already followed as their own number and puts account growth next to it. It is narrow on purpose: it only sees fans who reached the follow invitation in an automation. Better pick if you want a number you can defend to a brand or to yourself. Details on the follower growth page.
How does theZio measure followers gained from auto DMs?
Both checks use Instagram's own answer. Meta's user profile API returns `is_user_follow_business`, true when the fan follows your account. Meta also says this profile data is only available once the person has messaged the business, which is why the check happens on the fan's tap and not on their comment.
- A fan comments your keyword. theZio sends the private reply with a button, for example "Send me the details".
- The fan taps it. theZio asks Instagram whether they follow you and shows your follow invitation.
- The fan taps your button, for example "Done, send it", or types a reply. theZio checks again.
- Not following, then following: one follower gained. Following at the invitation: counted under already following.
- Either way, the fan gets what you promised. Ask For Follow sends one light reminder at most, then delivers.
Story automations work the same way, with the status checked as the DM carrying the invitation goes out. If Instagram does not answer a check, the fan is still delivered to, but nothing is counted. Only a real yes from Instagram becomes a gain.
FanPLAN
Creator (auto)Here is your plan! If you like my posts, tap Follow so you catch part 2.
Why are fans who already followed you not counted as new?
That second number is useful on its own. A Reel where most commenters already follow you is a community post: good for sales, less so for growth. A Reel where most commenters were strangers is a reach post. Use the split to decide which Reels deserve a freebie aimed at new people.
Why are new followers and account growth shown side by side, not as a share?
Here is how they can disagree. Say your automations brought 400 new followers in a week, and your account grew by 250. That does not mean the DM brought 160% of your growth. It means some people unfollowed during the same week, which happens to every account. Read the two numbers together: the first tells you the DM is working, the second tells you where the account is heading.
Those figures are an illustration, not data from any creator. Your own numbers sit in Analytics, under Follower growth, with daily bars for new followers.
Does the report count followers from before it was switched on?
Why only an estimate? Older chats kept less detail. The second check in an old chat may have been Instagram not answering, which would overcount. Fans who were already following at the time are not visible at all, which undercounts. And the date shown is the chat's last update, close to the follow but not exact. So the estimate is labelled, and the "this week" claims never use it.
Your follower count history only starts once theZio records daily snapshots, so account growth needs a few days before the net number appears.
Where other methods beat theZio's count
theZio is our product, and a strict count leaves things out. Here is what it does not see, and where another method tells you more.
- Follows that skip the DM. A fan who watches the Reel and taps Follow without commenting never reaches the automation. Instagram Insights sees that follow; theZio does not.
- Fans who follow later. A fan who follows a day after the chat ended is not counted. The report only compares the checks inside the chat.
- Fans who type instead of tapping. A fan who types instead of tapping "Send me the details" is checked once, at the follow step. If they had followed by then, they show as already following.
- Automations without the invitation. The report only sees automations with Ask For Follow switched on. Without it, there is no follow step to measure.
- Overall audience size. Brands still ask for your follower count. The report adds context to it; it does not replace it.
Every gap above makes theZio's number smaller, never bigger. That is the trade we chose: a conservative count you can quote without an asterisk.
How do you see how many followers your auto DMs brought?
- In Automations, open the automation on your Reel and turn on Ask them to follow you.
- Write the invitation as an invitation: "If you like my posts, tap Follow so you catch part 2." The freebie goes out whether they follow or not.
- Open Analytics after a day or two. The weekly report email and the Home tile show new followers whenever there are some.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know how many followers my Instagram auto DMs brought?
Use a count that checks each fan with Instagram at the follow invitation and again when they reply. theZio's follower growth report does this and shows the result in Analytics, next to fans who already followed and your account growth.
Does a fan have to follow to get the freebie?
No. With theZio the DM invites the fan to follow and always delivers what you promised, whether they follow or not. Making a follow the price of a reward goes against Meta's spam rules and annoys the fans you want to keep.
Can Instagram Insights show followers from a specific Reel?
Meta's developer docs list a follows metric for posts and stories, so Insights can show follows linked to a post. It counts every path from that post, not only the DM, so it cannot tell you what the automation added on its own.
Why is my account growth lower than my new followers from automations?
Account growth is net. It subtracts everyone who unfollowed in the same period. New followers from automations is gross and never goes down. Both can be right at the same time, which is why theZio shows them side by side and never as a share.
Is the follower growth report free?
Yes. It is on every theZio plan, Free included, and so is Ask For Follow, the invitation it measures.
