What is a messaging window (24 hours)?
Meta's Instagram Messaging API docs set the rule in two parts. An app can message someone only after that person has messaged the account, and it has 24 hours to respond to each message. Every new message from the person starts a fresh 24 hours. Meta's docs also describe a human agent tag that lets a response go outside the 24-hour window; as the name says, it is meant for a person answering.
The window is not the same as the 7-day private reply rule. A private reply is the one DM an account may send to someone who commented on its post. The comment itself gives permission, so no messaging window is needed, but Meta's Private Replies docs allow only one, within 7 days of the comment. After that first DM, the fan has to write back before a normal conversation can continue.
Put together, a comment-to-DM flow works like this. The fan comments your keyword. The tool sends one private reply. The fan replies or taps a button in that DM, which opens the 24-hour window. Now follow-ups such as an email ask or the freebie link can go as normal messages, until 24 hours pass without a word from the fan.
theZio sticks to both rules. Its opening DM is a private reply. Later messages go only while the fan's window is open. Comments older than 7 days get a public reply instead of a DM. For the full set of limits, read Instagram DM limits explained.
Example
ExampleA fan replies "yes please" at 9 pm on Monday, so the account can keep messaging them until 9 pm on Tuesday.
