Instagram DM limits explained

Search "Instagram DM limit" and you will find a dozen confident numbers: 50 a day, 100 a day, 200 an hour. Most of them are guesses about manual DMs, repeated from blog to blog with no source.

This guide sticks to what Meta actually publishes for apps that send DMs through the official Instagram API, the route comment-to-DM tools use. Every number below links to the Meta page it came from. Where Meta does not publish a number, this guide says so instead of making one up.

Private reply rules: one message, within 7 days

A private reply is the DM your account sends to someone because they commented. It is the message a comment-to-DM tool sends when a fan types your keyword.

  • One per comment. The private reply is a single message. You cannot send a second private reply to the same comment, so the first one has to carry the link, the freebie or a clear next step.
  • Within 7 days. The reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment. After that, the only way to answer is a public reply under the comment.
  • Per comment, not per fan. If the same fan comments on two different Reels, each comment can get its own private reply.

The 7-day rule matters most for old posts. A Reel from last month may still pull comments today, and those new comments can get a DM. The comments from last month cannot.

What are Instagram's hourly and daily DM limits?

Meta's Send Messages page sets rate limits per Instagram professional account, and they differ by message type.

  • 750 calls an hour for private replies to comments on posts and Reels. This is the one that bites when a Reel goes viral, because every commenter gets a private reply.
  • 100 calls a second for messages with text, links, reactions and stickers. This covers the chat after a fan replies.
  • 10 calls a second for messages that contain audio or video.

Is there a daily DM limit?

The Meta developer pages cited here list hourly and per-second limits, not a fixed daily number. You will see daily figures on other blogs, usually about typing DMs by hand in the app. Meta does not publish a fixed number for those either, so treat any exact figure as a guess.

What Meta does publish is its spam policy: very high frequency activity is not allowed, manual or automated, and lower frequencies can still be restricted when content is repetitive. The safe habit is the same either way: send only messages people asked for, at a steady pace.

What is Instagram's 24-hour messaging window?

Private replies start the conversation. Everything after that follows the normal messaging rules on Meta's Send Messages page.

  1. An app can message a person only after that person has messaged the account.
  2. The app then has 24 hours to respond.
  3. If a human agent needs more time, the reply can carry the human agent tag, which allows a response within 7 days. Meta's Human Agent page describes it for real human support, like a weekend when the business is closed, not for automated messages.

In practice: when a fan taps a button or replies to your first DM, the chat is open and the tool can keep going, for example to ask for an email and then send the download link. If the fan goes quiet for more than a day, a well-built tool stops messaging them.

What does an auto DM tool do when a Reel goes viral?

Say a Reel picks up 2,000 keyword comments in its first hour. Meta's limit is 750 private reply calls an hour for your account. A tool that tries to fire all 2,000 at once hits the limit, gets errors back, and may drop replies. A tool that sends in a flood also makes your account look like spam.

A well-built tool does four things instead:

  1. Queues every comment the moment it arrives, so none are lost.
  2. Paces the first DMs below the hourly private reply limit and carries the rest into the next hour.
  3. Keeps open chats moving. A fan who replied to their DM should not wait behind thousands of new commenters, because follow-up messages sit under a separate, per-second limit.
  4. Watches the 7-day clock. A comment near the end of its 7 days either gets its DM in time or a public reply, never an error.

At 750 an hour, 2,000 comments clear in under three hours. Every fan still gets their DM, well inside the 7-day limit. Read is Instagram automation safe? for how pacing fits Meta's wider rules.

How theZio handles these limits

theZio is built on the official Instagram API and designed around the limits above.

  • First DMs go into a per-account queue and are sent below Meta's 750-an-hour private reply limit.
  • Replies in open chats run in their own lane, so a fan who answered is not stuck behind a viral queue.
  • Public replies to comments are capped per post each hour, so the comment thread does not fill with identical replies.
  • Comments older than 7 days get a public reply only, because a private reply is no longer allowed. You choose which comments an automation answers: new only, the last 24 hours plus new on every plan, or all old comments on Pro.

Your plan limit is separate from Meta's. The Free plan includes 1,000 auto DMs a month; Pro is ₹499 a month, or ₹399 a month billed yearly. See pricing, or read the comment-to-DM guide.

Tips to get the most from your limits

  • Put the value in the first message. You get one private reply per comment. Lead with the link or the freebie, not a long hello.
  • Use one clear keyword per Reel. A distinct word is easier for fans to type and for the tool to match.
  • Do not run two tools on one post. Both would try to answer the same comment, and only one private reply is allowed.
  • Switch automations on early. Comments from the first day are easy to answer; comments older than 7 days can only get a public reply.
  • Ask for the next step in the DM. A button or a question opens the 24-hour window, so you can send more, like the full guide or a sign-up link.

Frequently asked questions

How many DMs can I send on Instagram per day?

Meta's developer pages cited here list hourly and per-second limits for apps, not a fixed daily number: 750 private reply calls an hour for comments on posts and Reels, and 100 calls a second for text messages. Meta does not publish a fixed daily number for manual DMs either.

What is the private reply limit on Instagram?

Each comment can get one private reply, and it has to be sent within 7 days of the comment. On top of that, an account can make 750 private reply calls an hour for comments on posts and Reels.

What is the 24-hour rule for Instagram DMs?

An app can message someone only after they message the account, and it has 24 hours to respond. A human agent can use the human agent tag to reply within 7 days, for real support cases.

What happens to comments over the hourly limit?

With a queue, nothing is lost. The tool sends up to the limit this hour and the rest in the next hours. Because private replies are allowed for 7 days, a short wait still gets every fan their DM.

Is theZio's monthly DM count the same as Meta's limit?

No. Meta's limits are per hour and per second for every app. theZio's plan limit is a monthly count: 1,000 auto DMs on Free, no monthly DM cap on Pro. theZio paces sends within Meta's limits on every plan.
