"Free" on an auto DM tool can mean almost anything. One free plan stops after 25 people. Another sends unlimited DMs but only 20 an hour. A third is generous on volume and locks email capture behind a paid plan. You only find out which one you picked when a Reel takes off.

What does a free auto DM plan actually count?

DMs a month. Every DM sent counts. Easy to predict: 1,000 DMs covers roughly 1,000 keyword comments.
Contacts a month. Every unique person counts once. Small caps here run out fast on a viral Reel.
DMs an hour. No monthly ceiling, but a spike waits in a queue. Fans may get the DM hours later.
Automations. How many posts or keywords you can run at once. Matters if you post daily.

One rule applies to every tool: Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it. No free or paid plan can change that, so make the first DM carry the link or file.

"Locked to paid" lists only what the sources report. A blank spot in a review is not proof a feature exists on free, so check the tool's own plan list for anything you rely on.

What each free plan really gives you

ManyChat Free: 25 contacts

According to ChatBot.com in September 2026, ManyChat accounts created after 2 March 2026 get 25 active contacts a month on Free. A contact is a person, counted once a month however many messages you exchange. That covers testing the builder, not a Reel that gets a few hundred keyword comments. Older accounts may keep legacy limits.

LinkDM Free: 1,000 DMs

SetSmart reports in September 2026 that LinkDM's free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month on one account, with LinkDM branding on messages that Pro at $19 a month removes. Counting DMs rather than people makes it easy to predict.

QuickDM Free: unlimited automations, 20 DMs an hour

QuickDM's pricing page, checked on 27 September 2026, lists unlimited automations at up to 20 DMs an hour, a follower check for up to 100 fans, up to 100 emails and story replies, with Pro Growth at ₹399 a month at up to 185 DMs an hour. Steady comments are handled well; a spike of 300 comments in an hour would take about 15 hours to clear at 20 an hour. More in theZio vs QuickDM.

ReplyKaro Free Forever

ReplyKaro's pricing page, checked on 27 September 2026, lists a Free Forever plan with 1,000 DMs a month, 3 active automations and 1 account, with no card and no expiry. Story replies and its follow gate are included. Paid Starter is ₹99 a month in India for 30,000 DMs, and Pro is ₹299 a month with unlimited DMs. See theZio vs ReplyKaro.

InstantDM Free: 500 DMs

InstantDM's pricing page reports a free plan of 500 DMs a month with no card, plus a 7-day trial of paid features. Legend Pro is reported at $9.99 a month. See theZio vs InstantDM.

SuperProfile Free: unlimited comment DMs

SuperProfile's own blog says its AutoDM is unlimited on the free plan. CreatorLane reports in 2026 that story replies and email capture need its paid Creator plan (reports differ on the price). Great for volume; weaker if you want to collect emails for free.

CreatorFlow Free: 500 DMs

CreatorFlow's pricing page reports 500 DMs a month on one account, with story-reply automation included and email collection on Pro at $15 a month. Its free plan guide says automations pause at the cap and resume at the next cycle or on upgrade.

Zorcha Free: unlimited DMs

Zorcha's pricing page reports unlimited DMs on the free plan, with Ask for Follow, a basic DM queue and basic analytics. Third-party reviews disagree on how many automations it allows, and email collection is reported on the Ultimate plan.

Story replies without a keyword: CreatorFlow reports story-reply automation on its free plan, and ReplyKaro and QuickDM list it on theirs, ReplyKaro with story mentions too. theZio Free answers Story replies that use your keyword; replying to every Story reply and thank-you DMs for Story mentions are on Pro.
Several accounts: LinkDM and CreatorFlow report paid plans that cover several Instagram accounts, if you manage more than one.

Test a free plan in one afternoon

Pick one older post that still gets a few comments. Do not start with your next big Reel.
Connect through Meta's login screen. If a tool asks for your Instagram password, stop.
Set one keyword and one DM with your link or file.
Comment from a second account and time how long the DM takes.
Check the limit meter in the dashboard so you know what one comment costs against the free cap.
Only then promote the keyword in a new Reel.

Never point two tools at the same post while testing. Meta allows one private reply per comment, and a fan who gets two DMs for one comment is more likely to report it under Meta's spam rules.

When is a free auto DM plan no longer enough?

Upgrade when the limit starts costing you fans, not before. Signs: DMs arriving hours late on an hourly cap, the monthly cap running out mid-month, or needing a feature you keep working around, like email capture or old comments. Can a free auto DM tool get my account banned?

Tools on the official Instagram API sign you in through Meta and pace sends, which keeps you within the rules. The risks are spammy DMs, two tools on one post, or tools that ask for your password. Keep each DM useful and on-topic.
