What is a dm rate limit?

Rate limits matter most when a Reel takes off. If 5,000 people comment your keyword in an hour, Meta's rate limits page allows 750 private reply calls an hour per professional account for comments on posts and Reels. The rest have to wait. A tool that fires every DM at once hits the wall, gets errors back from Instagram and can drop fans.

Messages in an open chat count separately. Once a fan writes back or taps a button, replies go through the Send API, which has a per-second limit instead of an hourly one. When we checked on 17 October 2026, Meta's page listed 300 calls a second for text, links, reactions and stickers, and 10 a second for audio or video. Meta updates these numbers, so check the page if you build on the API yourself.

A rate limit is not the same as the other DM rules. Meta's private replies rules allow one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days, and follow-ups only within 24 hours of the fan's reply. Those decide whether a DM is allowed at all. The rate limit decides how fast allowed DMs can go out.

theZio queues every DM and paces first DMs at 700 an hour per account, under Meta's 750, so a viral Reel drains steadily instead of failing. Follow-up messages run in their own lane, so a fan who replies is not stuck behind the queue, and if Instagram asks theZio to slow down, it backs off automatically. See safe, paced sending for how it works.

Questions people ask

How many DMs can an Instagram account send per hour?

Through Meta's official API, an account can send 750 private replies an hour to people who commented on its posts and Reels. Messages in chats a fan has opened have a separate per-second limit. Meta does not list a fixed daily cap on these pages.

What happens when a viral Reel goes over the DM rate limit?

Calls over the limit are refused by Instagram. A tool with a queue holds the extra DMs and sends them as the hour resets, so every fan still gets their DM, just a little later. theZio paces first DMs at 700 an hour for this reason.

Is the DM rate limit the same as the 7-day rule?

No. The rate limit is about speed: how many DMs an hour or a second. The 7-day rule is about time: a private reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment, or only a public reply is possible.
