Instagram link sticker vs sending the link by DM

You have a link to share: a free guide, a booking page, a product page. On Instagram you have three places to put it. Your bio, a story link sticker, or a DM. Most creators default to the sticker because it is right there in the story tray.
The sticker is useful, but it is not the same job as a DM. This guide explains what the link sticker does according to Instagram's own help pages, where it quietly loses clicks, and when sending the link by DM works better. Then it shows how to run both together.
Link sticker or DM: the quick answer
| Story link sticker | Link sent by DM | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | On one story | In the fan's DM inbox |
| Who sees it | Anyone who can see that story | Only the fan who asked |
| How long it lasts | 24 hours, unless saved to a highlight | Until the fan deletes the chat |
| Works on Reels and posts | No, it is a story sticker | Yes, via a comment keyword |
| You know who tapped | Not by name | Yes, each fan is a DM thread |
| Can collect an email | No | Yes, if your tool asks in the chat |
| Effort for the fan | One tap, while the story is live | Comment one word, then one tap |
How the Instagram link sticker works
The link sticker sits in the same sticker tray as polls, questions and music. Instagram's stickers help page describes it simply: enter the URL, tap See Preview to check how it opens, and anyone who can see your story can tap the sticker to visit the link.
- Open the story camera and add your photo or video.
- Tap the sticker icon and pick Link.
- Paste your URL. Optionally change the sticker text to something clearer than the bare web address.
- Tap See Preview to check the page opens properly, then place the sticker and share.
It replaced the old swipe-up link. Instagram opened link stickers to every account in October 2021, not just large or verified ones, and said it would watch how links are used and could take the sticker away from accounts that break its rules. If the sticker is missing for you, update the app first, then check your account status in settings.
The 24-hour rule
Stories disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours, unless you add them to a highlight, per Instagram's stories help page. Highlights stay on your profile until you remove them, according to the highlights help page. So a link sticker you want to keep working belongs in a highlight.
Where the link sticker loses clicks
The sticker is honest and simple. It also has four gaps that matter for creators.
- Stories reach the people who already watch you. Reels are often shown to people who have never seen your stories, and a Reel cannot carry a link sticker.
- The clock runs out. A fan who sees the story at 11pm on a slow connection and plans to come back tomorrow finds it gone, unless you added a highlight and they think to look there.
- It is anonymous. You can see story activity, but you do not get a list of who tapped the link, and you cannot follow up with them.
- One link for everyone. A fan who wanted the vegetarian plan and a fan who wanted the gym plan both get the same link.
None of this makes the sticker bad. It just means it works best for one moment with your existing followers, not as the main way a Reel turns into clicks.
How sending the link by DM works
The DM route starts on a Reel or post. You say "Comment ITINERARY and I will send it to you". A fan comments the word, and a comment-to-DM tool sends them a private reply with the link within seconds. You never type a single DM by hand.
FanITINERARY
Creator (auto)Hey! Here's my 4-day Goa itinerary, with every cafe and beach 🏖️
Creator (auto)Tap below to open it. Save this chat so you have it on the trip.
Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, according to its Private Replies documentation. That is why the first DM should carry the link itself. If the fan replies, the chat continues like any other DM thread.
What you get that the sticker cannot give you:
- It works where reach happens. Any Reel or post, including ones shown to people who have never seen your stories.
- The link stays. It sits in the fan's inbox until they delete the chat. No 24-hour clock.
- You know who asked. Every request is a named conversation, and your dashboard shows how many fans commented and got the DM.
- Different keywords, different links. One automation can send the veg plan for VEG and the gym plan for GYM.
- Room for one more ask. The DM can invite the fan to follow you or ask for their email, and still deliver the link either way.
When to use the sticker, and when to use a DM
Use the link sticker for
- Time-bound news for followers: a live session today, a sale ending tonight, a new video on YouTube.
- Links you do not need to track by person, like a brand collab page or a news article.
- A permanent highlight called "Links" or "Freebies" so profile visitors always find your main pages.
Use a DM link for
- Any Reel built to grow: a freebie, a checklist, a recipe card, a free ebook.
- Links you want fans to keep, like an itinerary, a workout plan or a course page they will open later.
- Anything where you want to know who asked, or collect an email for your newsletter.
- Paid offers. The DM carries the link to your own payment page, for example a Razorpay, Instamojo or Topmate page you already run.
How to use both together
The two routes do not compete. A simple weekly rhythm uses each where it is strongest.
- Post the Reel with a comment keyword. Say it in the video and in the caption: "Comment ITINERARY for the full plan."
- Share the Reel to your story the same day. Add a short text: "Comment ITINERARY on this Reel and it lands in your DMs." Story viewers tap through to the Reel and comment.
- Add a link sticker for the followers who want it now. Point it to the same page, so nobody gets a different version.
- Save that story to a highlight so the link sticker keeps working after 24 hours.
- Keep your bio links tidy. Instagram lets you add up to 5 links to your profile. Put the evergreen pages there, not this week's freebie.
One note on stories. theZio can also send the DM when a fan replies to your story with the keyword, on every plan. In this playbook the story still sends people to the Reel, so the comment on the Reel triggers the DM and the Reel keeps collecting comments.
Still deciding between your bio and the DM? Link in bio vs comment-to-DM covers that comparison step by step.
Set up a DM link on a Reel in five minutes
- Sign up for theZio and connect with Instagram Login. You need a Creator or Business account, not a Facebook Page, and theZio never sees your password.
- Create an automation and pick the Reel, or choose All posts so the keyword works anywhere.
- Add your keyword trigger, like ITINERARY. Matching ignores caps and small letters; on Pro, smart match also catches typos and variations.
- Write the DM and paste your link, or pick a file from Products. A file goes out as a private download link that works for 30 days and 10 downloads.
- Optionally add a public reply on the comment, an invite to follow you, or an email ask. The link is delivered either way.
- Save. It is Live straight away. Comment from a second account to test it.
If the Reel is already out, choose last 24 hours plus new so recent commenters get the DM too. On Pro you can answer all old comments; anything older than 7 days gets a public reply instead, because Meta no longer allows a private reply.
The Free plan includes 1,000 auto DMs a month with no card. Pro is ₹499 a month, or ₹399 a month billed yearly. See pricing, or read the beginner's setup guide for every screen.
Mistakes that cost you clicks
- Leaving the sticker text as a raw URL. "Free Goa plan" gets more taps than a long web address.
- Saying "link in story" on a Reel. Reel viewers who do not follow you will not find your story tomorrow. Give them a comment keyword instead.
- Asking fans to follow you to get the link. Meta's spam policy does not allow gating content behind engagement. Deliver the link, then invite the follow.
- Using an everyday word as the keyword. "Nice" and "wow" trigger DMs for fans who were just being friendly. Pick a clear word like PLAN or ITINERARY.
- Different links in different places. Point the sticker, the bio and the DM to the same page so you can compare what is working.

Frequently asked questions
Who can use the Instagram link sticker?
Instagram opened link stickers to all accounts in October 2021, replacing swipe-up links that only some accounts had. Instagram can limit the feature for accounts that break its rules. If you cannot see it, update the app and check your account status.
Can I add a link sticker to a Reel or a post?
No. Instagram's help pages describe the link sticker as a story sticker: anyone who can see your story can tap it. For a Reel or post, put the link in your bio or send it by DM when a fan comments a keyword.
Does a link sticker disappear after 24 hours?
The story does, and the sticker goes with it. Instagram removes stories from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours unless you add them to a highlight. Highlights stay until you remove them, so save stories with important links there.
Is sending links by DM against Instagram's rules?
No, when it is done on the official API in reply to a fan who asked. Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days. Keep it to fans who commented your keyword, never make the link depend on a follow, and pace the DMs within Instagram's limits.
Can theZio send the DM when a fan replies to my story?
Not today. theZio sends DMs when fans comment a keyword on your posts and Reels. Use your story to point people to the Reel, and the comment there triggers the DM.
