ManyChat free plan limits for Instagram, explained
ManyChat is the tool most creators think of first for "comment LINK and I'll DM you". For years its Free plan was enough to run a small Instagram account. In 2026 that changed, and a lot of creators only found out when their automations stopped behaving the way they expected.
This guide explains the current Free plan limits in plain words, using ManyChat's own blog posts as the source. It covers what an active contact is, what 25 of them means for a real Reel, what Pro costs in dollars, where ManyChat is genuinely strong, and how to decide whether to upgrade or use a different tool.
What the ManyChat Free plan includes today
Those figures come from ManyChat's post Manychat Pricing Explained, first published on 19 August 2026. ManyChat's pricing page and help centre would not load for us when we checked on 3 October 2026, so confirm the numbers there before you decide. Pricing pages change more often than blog posts.

Four live automations is enough to test a few Reels. Two channels is enough if Instagram is the only one you care about. The number that decides everything for a creator is the first one: 25 active contacts a month.
What counts as an active contact
ManyChat defines an active contact as a person who interacts with you through ManyChat during your current billing month. In its April 2026 announcement, Manychat Pricing Is Changing, it describes this as a person you interact with through DMs or automations in a given month, counted once no matter how many messages you exchange.
For an Instagram creator, that usually means every fan who comments your keyword and gets the DM. If 25 different people comment GUIDE this month, you have used the Free allowance. A fan who comments on three Reels in the same month still counts once. Next month the count starts again from zero.
How this differs from the old Free plan
ManyChat's explainer says the old Free limit was 1,000 contacts, cumulative and lifetime. Once an account hit 1,000 total contacts, sending stopped unless you upgraded, even if you deleted contacts. The new model counts only people active in the month, but the monthly number is much smaller. ManyChat said in April 2026 that the new pricing applied to new users first and that existing customers would get advance notice, so an older account may still be on the earlier limits.
What 25 contacts means for a real Reel
Comment-to-DM works best on Reels that travel. That is also when a small cap runs out fastest. Here is a simple way to think about it.
- A quiet post with 10 keyword comments a week uses about 40 contacts a month. That is already past 25.
- A Reel that does well can bring 100 or more keyword comments in its first day. The Free allowance covers the first 25 people.
- A viral Reel with 2,000 commenters in a month fits inside Pro's 2,500 contacts, but not Free.
ManyChat's explainer does not spell out exactly what a Free account sees once it passes 25 active contacts in a month, so check your own dashboard. Either way, plan for Free as a way to learn the builder, not as a way to run a growing account. ManyChat itself describes Free as built for learning and experimenting.

What ManyChat Pro costs and how it scales
Per the same August 2026 explainer, Pro costs $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly, and includes up to 2,500 active contacts a month. Past that, extra contacts are charged at about $0.05 each on monthly billing, or $0.038 on yearly billing. ManyChat also says AI Replies are included in Pro at no extra cost.

These are our own sums from ManyChat's published rates, so treat them as estimates. Two more things matter for Indian creators. The bill is in US dollars, so the rupee cost moves with the exchange rate. And many Indian cards add a foreign transaction fee on top. Check both before you compare prices.
Where ManyChat is strong
A fair look at the Free plan should also say why so many people pay for ManyChat. It is a mature product, and for some setups it is the right choice.
- Many channels in one tool. ManyChat runs chat automation beyond Instagram, and its paid plans add more channels plus WhatsApp. If you message fans in several places, one builder is easier than several tools.
- A deep flow builder. Branching conversations, conditions, tags and custom fields. If you want a full chatbot, it goes much further than a simple comment-to-DM tool.
- AI Replies on Pro. ManyChat says AI Replies are included in Pro at no extra cost.
- Active contacts are fair for quiet months. You pay for people who interacted this month, not everyone who ever did. An account with a few big launches a year is not punished for old contacts.

If you only need Instagram comment-to-DM
Many Indian creators use one flow: a fan comments a keyword and gets a link or a freebie. For that one job, a free tier counted in DMs can go further than 25 contacts. Compare any tool on the same unit you care about: how many fans you can answer in a month on a good Reel.
theZio is one option. Its Free plan covers 1,000 auto DMs a month and up to 1,000 contacts in total, with no card. Pro removes both caps and costs ₹499 a month, or ₹399 a month billed yearly, in rupees. It is Instagram only, with no flow builder, so it is not a like-for-like swap if you use ManyChat's other channels.

Whatever you pick, use the official Instagram API and never share your password. Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days, per its Private Replies documentation, so the first DM must carry the value. Upgrade, stay or switch: a quick way to decide
- Count last month's keyword commenters. Under 25 and not growing? ManyChat Free can still work for testing.
- List the channels you really use. If you automate chats outside Instagram too, ManyChat's paid plans are built for that.
- Check how complex your flows are. Many branches and tags suit ManyChat. One keyword and one link suit a simpler tool.
- Work out the rupee cost. Take ManyChat's dollar price at today's rate, add your card's foreign transaction fee, and compare it with tools billed in rupees.
