Link in bio vs comment-to-DM

Every Indian creator has said it: "Link in bio!" And every creator has watched the views climb while the clicks barely move. The fan was interested. They just had to stop the Reel, open your profile, find the link, open a page of ten links and pick the right one. Most people give up somewhere in between.

Comment-to-DM was built for that gap. This guide compares the two honestly: what each one is good at, where each one fails, and the simple setup most creators end up using, with both working together.

The difference in one minute

Think of the bio link as your shop's signboard and the DM as handing the fan the exact item they pointed at. You need the signboard. But when someone says "I want that one", you do not send them back to read the signboard.

A comment-to-DM setup listens for a keyword trigger, like LINK or RECIPE, on a post you choose. When a fan comments it, the tool sends an auto DM with your message and link.

Instagram lets you add a website to your profile, and since 2023 it has been reported to allow up to five links in your bio. Only one shows up front; the others sit behind a tap on your profile. Many creators skip that and use a single link-in-bio page instead, such as Linktree, which opens a list of all their links, products and socials.

The bio link is great at a few things:

  • It is always there. A fan who finds you next month still finds your links.
  • It works for profile visitors. People who land on your profile from Explore, a collab or a share can browse everything you offer.
  • It holds many things. Your course, your latest video, your shop, your brand-enquiry form, all in one place.

Where it struggles is the moment of interest. A fan watching your Reel wants the one thing in that Reel. Sending them to your profile adds steps, and every step loses people. If your page has ten links, they also have to work out which one you meant.

How comment-to-DM works

You end the Reel with "Comment LINK and I'll DM it to you." A fan comments. Within seconds they get a DM with the exact link, file or offer. They never leave the app's flow of comment and chat, and they never hunt through a page.

The first message is a private reply to the comment. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it, according to its Private Replies documentation. If the fan replies, the chat carries on like any other DM thread.

Comment-to-DM is great at a different set of things:

  • One step for the fan. Comment one word, get the link. No profile visit, no page of links.
  • The right link every time. Each Reel can send its own link, so a fan never picks the wrong one.
  • More comments on the Reel. Every keyword comment is a comment on your post, which is engagement you were not getting from "link in bio".
  • A conversation you can build on. The fan is now in your DMs. You can ask for an email or invite them to follow you, after the link is already in their hands.

Where it struggles: it only works for people who comment, and only on the posts you set it up on. Someone browsing your profile a month later still needs your bio link. For a step-by-step setup, read how to auto DM people who comment.

Why most creators use both

This is not a contest. The two tools cover different fans. The bio link catches people who visit your profile. Comment-to-DM catches people who react to a Reel. Use both and you stop losing either group.

A simple setup that works for most creators:

  1. Keep your link-in-bio page for everything evergreen: your shop, your course, your best content, your brand-enquiry email.
  2. Add comment-to-DM to every Reel with an offer. A product, a freebie, a recipe, a discount code. Pick a short keyword and say it clearly at the end of the Reel.
  3. Send a direct link in the DM, not your whole page. The fan asked for one thing. Give them that one thing. If you do want to share the full page, add it as a second line.
  4. Mention the bio link in the DM too. "Everything else I use is in my bio" sends the curious fans to your page without making everyone go there.

Already use Linktree? You do not have to move. A theZio DM can send your Linktree link, or a single product link from it. See the honest theZio vs Linktree comparison for where each tool fits.

Mistakes to avoid with either one

  • "Link in bio" on a Reel with one offer. If the Reel promises one thing, ask for a comment instead. Keep "link in bio" for general calls to action.
  • A bio page with twenty links. Fans scan, then leave. Keep it to the five or six things that matter this month.
  • A keyword fans type by accident. "Nice" or "wow" will DM people who were only being friendly. Pick a clear word like LINK, DRESS or RECIPE.
  • Sending the whole page in the DM. The fan asked for one thing. A direct link converts better than a list.
  • Two tools on one post. If your link-in-bio tool also has an auto-reply, switch it off on any post theZio watches. One comment allows one private reply, so two tools means a double DM or a failed send.

Frequently asked questions

Is comment-to-DM better than link in bio?

For a specific offer in a specific Reel, yes: the fan gets the exact link in one step. For profile visitors browsing everything you do, the bio link is better. Most creators use both.

How many links can I put in my Instagram bio?

Instagram was reported in 2023 to allow up to five links in a bio. Only the first shows up front; the rest sit behind a tap. Check Instagram's Edit profile screen for what your account shows today.

Can theZio send my Linktree link in the DM?

Yes. Paste any link into the DM, including your Linktree page or one product on it. A direct link to the item the Reel promised usually works best.

Does theZio have a link-in-bio page?

Yes, since 19 October 2026. Max Pro (₹899 a month) includes a page at thezio.co/yourname with your links, a store for paid products and courses, and page analytics. Fans pay through Razorpay. You can also keep any link-in-bio tool you already use.

Will comment-to-DM work on my old Reels?

Yes, for new comments on any post you pick, or on all posts. When you switch an automation on, theZio can also answer the last 24 hours of comments on every plan, and all old comments on Pro. Comments older than 7 days get a public reply, because Instagram does not allow a DM that late.

Is comment-to-DM safe for my account?
