How to get more comments on Reels

Most Reels get views and almost no comments. Not because people did not like them. Because nobody gave them a reason to type, or the reason was buried in a long caption.

This guide is the practical list. What to say on screen, what to write in the caption, what to pin, how fast to reply and how to make each comment worth something to the person who left it. No hacks, no bait, nothing that puts your account at risk.

Why your Reels get views but no comments

Think about how you scroll. You watch, you maybe like, you move on. Typing a comment is effort. It needs a trigger: a question you have an opinion on, a word that gets you something, or a creator who clearly reads and replies.

A note on the algorithm, because every guide makes claims about it. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has named watch time, likes and sends (shares by DM) as the top three ranking signals, as reported by Social Media Today. Comments are not on that list. So do not chase comments as a magic reach button. Chase them because a comment is the start of a conversation, and conversations are where fans become followers, subscribers and buyers.

1. Ask for one thing, clearly

"Like, share, save, comment and follow" is five asks. People do none of them. Pick the one action this Reel is for. If it is comments, say so plainly and say what to type.

Say it out loud in the Reel, put it as text on screen in the last 3 seconds, and repeat it in the first line of the caption. Viewers who watch with sound off still see it, and viewers who skip to the caption still find it.

2. Put the keyword in your caption

A keyword comment is the easiest comment anyone can leave. One word, no thinking. That is why a clear "Comment LINK" ask is easier to answer than an open "thoughts?".

  • Lead the caption with it. "Comment GEAR and I'll DM you my full kit list." The first line is all most people read before the "more" cut.
  • Keep it short and obvious. One word, easy to spell on a phone keyboard, tied to what they get: PLAN, RECIPE, GUIDE, PRESET.
  • Show it on screen. A text overlay with the keyword in big letters, held long enough to read.
  • Say what happens next. "I'll DM you" tells people the comment is not wasted.

Need words that work in your niche? See the comment keyword ideas list, with Hinglish options like "bhai LINK" that fans already type.

3. Ask real questions people want to answer

Not every Reel needs a freebie. For the rest, a good question does the same job. The trick is to ask something people have a quick, confident answer to.

  • Either-or questions. "Chai or coffee before a workout?" Anyone can answer in one word.
  • Experience questions. "What's the worst advice you got about your first salary?" People love telling their story.
  • Fill-in-the-blank. "My go-to Sunday breakfast is ___."
  • Ask for the next topic. "What should I review next?" Then actually make it, and say who asked.

Avoid questions with a right answer that only experts know. Nobody wants to be publicly wrong in your comments.

4. Pin a comment that shows the way

Instagram lets you pin comments to the top of a post. Use that space. A pinned comment is the first thing people see when they open the thread, so it sets the tone for everyone after.

  • Pin your own instruction. "Comment GEAR and check your DMs" catches people who skipped the caption.
  • Pin a great fan answer. A real, thoughtful reply to your question invites others to add theirs.
  • Pin proof. A fan saying "got it, thanks!" shows the keyword actually works.

5. Reply fast, especially in the first hour

Replies matter. A reply tells the fan you saw them. It also tells everyone else reading the thread that commenting here gets a response.

  • Block time after posting. Stay around for the first hour and reply to as many comments as you can.
  • Reply with a question. "Which day of the plan was hardest?" keeps the thread going.
  • Vary your replies. Ten identical "Thanks!" replies look automated and add nothing.
  • Use public replies on keyword comments. A short "Sent! Check your DMs" under each keyword comment shows the next viewer the freebie is real.

For keyword comments, you do not have to type every reply by hand. theZio can post a short public reply under each keyword comment, rotating between wordings you write so the thread stays natural, and paced so a busy thread never looks like spam. More on that in auto reply to Instagram comments.

6. Make every comment pay off with comment-to-DM

This is the biggest lever. When a comment gets the fan something real, in their inbox, within seconds, they comment. And they tell friends to comment.

FanGEAR

Creator (auto)Hey! Here is my full vlogging kit list, with what I'd buy on a ₹20k budget 🎥

Here is how it works. A fan comments your keyword. theZio sends them a DM automatically with your link, file or message, through Instagram's official private reply. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment (Meta for Developers), and theZio handles that for you.

theZio's Free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month, and Pro is ₹499 a month. See comment-to-DM for setup, or the step-by-step auto DM when someone comments guide.

The DM is also a good place to grow. With Ask For Follow, the DM invites the fan to tap Follow, and theZio still delivers what you promised either way. Your freebie stays a gift, not a trade.

What not to do: engagement bait and spam

Some tactics bring comments for a week and trouble after. Meta's Spam policy covers content that tries to artificially boost engagement. Stay clear of these:

  • Comment pods and swap groups. Groups where everyone comments on everyone's posts is inauthentic engagement, and the comments do not come from people who care.
  • Buying comments or using comment services. Fake accounts, fake words, real risk.
  • Tag-10-friends demands. Asking for mass tags fills your thread with notifications people did not ask for.
  • Gating a freebie behind actions. Making a fan follow, share or tag as a condition of getting what you promised is the classic bait pattern. Deliver the freebie, then invite them to follow.
  • Misleading promises. "Comment for ₹10,000" with no real giveaway behind it.

The honest version works better anyway. A useful freebie, a clear keyword and a fast DM is the whole system, and it is fully within the rules. Wondering whether automation itself is safe? Read is Instagram automation safe.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Plan 2 or 3 Reels a week with a keyword freebie, and 1 or 2 with a real question.
  2. Write the ask before you shoot. Say it in the Reel, show it on screen, lead the caption with it.
  3. Set the keyword automation before you post, so the first commenter gets the DM.
  4. Pin your instruction comment as soon as the Reel is live.
  5. Spend the first hour replying to non-keyword comments by hand.
  6. Check which keyword got the most comments in Analytics, and reuse what worked.

Have an older Reel that is still getting views? Add a keyword to its caption and set up an automation. With old comments, theZio can also answer keyword comments from the last 24 hours on every plan, or all old comments on Pro. Comments older than 7 days get a public reply only, since a DM is no longer allowed there.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get more comments on my Instagram Reels?

Ask for one specific thing, like a keyword or a one-word answer. Show it on screen, lead your caption with it, pin a comment that repeats it, and reply fast. A keyword that sends the fan a DM with something useful is the strongest reason to comment.

Do comments help Reels reach more people?

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has named watch time, likes and sends as the top three ranking signals, as reported by Social Media Today. Comments are not on that list, so treat them as the start of a conversation with fans, not a reach trick.

What should I write in my Reel caption to get comments?

Put the ask in the first line: "Comment PLAN and I'll DM you the 4-week plan." Keep the keyword to one short word that matches what the fan gets, and say what happens after they comment.

Is asking people to comment a keyword engagement bait?

Asking for a keyword and then delivering what you promised is a normal call to action. It becomes a problem when the reward is fake, when you demand tags or follows as a condition, or when comments come from pods or bought accounts. Meta's Spam policy covers artificially boosted engagement.

How fast should I reply to comments on a Reel?

As soon as you can, ideally within the first hour after posting. For keyword comments, a tool like theZio can send the DM and a short public reply automatically, so you can spend your time replying by hand to the real conversations.

Can I auto DM people who comment on my Reels for free?

Yes. theZio's Free plan sends keyword comment-to-DMs on your posts and Reels within a monthly DM allowance, using Instagram's official private reply. You need an Instagram professional account.
