How to reply to old Instagram comments automatically

It happens to every creator once. You post a Reel that says "comment NOTES and I'll send it", it takes off overnight, and you wake up to 800 comments and no automation running. Or you set one up yesterday and every fan who commented before that is still waiting.
Those fans asked for something. Leaving them without an answer costs you trust and the leads you made the Reel for. The good news: you can still answer most of them. The catch is a Meta rule about time, so it pays to move fast. This post covers the rule, how to do it by hand, and which tools reply to comments posted before you set them up. theZio is our product, so it is labelled as ours and this post says where other tools fit better.
How this list was made
We looked at the comment-to-DM tools Indian creators use most and asked one question: can the tool answer comments that were already on the post before you created the automation? We checked each tool's own pricing page on 10 October 2026 where it loaded, and a dated search where it did not. Four things mattered:
- Old comments, not old posts. Many tools let you pick an old post. That only catches new comments on it. We looked for tools that go back over comments already posted.
- Which plan. Is it on the free plan or a paid one?
- The 7-day rule. Does the tool tell you what happens to comments too old for a DM?
- Pacing. Does it spread a big batch out, so a burst of hundreds of DMs never looks like spam?
What is Instagram's 7-day rule for old comments?
When a fan comments, a professional account can send them one DM in response. Meta calls it a private reply, and its Private Replies documentation allows one per comment, sent within 7 days of that comment. Every comment-to-DM tool runs on this, so every tool lives by the same clock.
- Under 7 days old: the fan can still get the DM with your link or freebie.
- Over 7 days old: no tool can send the private reply any more. The only answer left is a public reply under the comment.
- One per comment: if a fan commented three times, you get three chances, but each comment takes only one private reply. Two tools on one post fight over the same reply.
So the clock starts the moment your Reel goes up. A Reel that blew up on Monday can still be fully answered on Saturday. By the next Tuesday, Monday's commenters can only get a public reply. See what a private reply is for the full rule.
How do you reply to old Instagram comments by hand?
If you have a few dozen comments, doing it yourself is free and personal. Open the post, start from the oldest comment and work forward, because the oldest are closest to the 7-day line.
- Reply publicly to each comment with something short: "Sent! Check your DMs." Never put the link in the public reply; links in comments look like spam.
- Send the DM from the fan's profile or your inbox. A fan who never messaged you may see it under message requests, so tell them that in the public reply.
- Keep a note of who you answered. On a busy post it is easy to DM the same person twice.
- Pace yourself. Do batches with breaks. Sending a hundred near-identical DMs in ten minutes is the pattern Meta's spam rules exist to catch.
By hand stops working somewhere past 50 to 100 comments. That is when a tool earns its keep.
Which tools reply to comments posted before setup?
Most tools only start counting from the moment you save the automation. Here is what each one says about older comments, with the date we checked. If a tool is listed as "not mentioned", that means we did not find it on its pages, not that it is impossible. Ask its support before you rely on it.
| Tool | Old comments (reported) | Plan | Checked |

Tool by tool
ManyChat
ManyChat is the biggest automation platform here, but on this question the answer reported on its own community forum is no: a moderator says automations only fire once they are created and active, and cannot act retroactively. This is a forum answer, not official docs, read via search on 10 October 2026. Better pick if you need multi-channel flows and broadcasts and can answer the backlog by hand once. See theZio vs ManyChat.
Zorcha
Zorcha's India pricing page, checked on 10 October 2026, lists Re Run: "Re-run an automation on older comments and messages so you don't miss anyone." It is on Pro, Ultimate and Business, not Free. It also covers older messages, which theZio's scan does not. Better pick if you already pay for Zorcha Pro or want old DMs re-run too. See theZio vs Zorcha.
InstantDM
InstantDM's pricing page, checked on 10 October 2026, lists "Re-run missed comments on a post" in its plan table. As we read the table, it is not on Free or Legend Pro and starts on higher plans; the page does not define "missed" or say whether comments from before setup count. Confirm with them. Better pick if you want story replies and an AI agent in the same tool. See theZio vs InstantDM.
LinkDM
We did not find replies to older comments on LinkDM's site when we checked it on 24 September 2026. It is strong on story replies and several accounts. Better pick if you run more than one Instagram account and want story-reply automation. See theZio vs LinkDM.
ReplyKaro and QuickDM
Neither ReplyKaro's pricing page (checked 27 September 2026) nor QuickDM's pricing page (checked 10 October 2026) mentions answering comments posted before setup. Both bill in rupees and list low paid prices. Better pick if the lowest monthly price matters more than the backlog. See theZio vs ReplyKaro and theZio vs QuickDM.
CreatorFlow
CreatorFlow's pricing page, checked on 10 October 2026, describes comment-to-DM and story replies but says nothing about older comments. Better pick if you want story replies on a free plan or a few team seats. See theZio vs CreatorFlow.
How does theZio reply to old comments (our tool)?
theZio is our product, so read this part critically. In any automation, open Advanced and find Which comments should this answer? There are three choices:
- New only (the default): only comments that arrive after you save.
- Last 24 hrs + new (every plan, including Free): also answers keyword comments from the day before you switched it on.
- All old comments + new (Pro, ₹499 a month or ₹399 a month billed yearly): goes back over the whole post.
Save, and the scan starts within a minute. A status line shows how many comments were checked, matched and sent, and Run again repeats it. Here is what happens to each matching comment:
- Under 7 days old: the fan gets the same DM as a new commenter, with your link, file or email capture. theZio keeps a few hours of margin before the 7-day line, so a DM never fails halfway through a queue.
- Older than 7 days: a public reply only, because Meta no longer allows the DM. Keep a public reply switched on, or those fans get nothing.
- Up to 2,000 comments per post. An automation set to all posts scans your newest 25 posts.
- Paced, never dumped. A big scan sends in steps and pauses for an hour when it hits the limit, instead of firing hundreds of DMs at once. A fan is never messaged twice.
FanNOTES
Creator (auto)Sorry for the wait, here are my notes! Tap below to open them.
Full details are on the old comments feature page. Editing the DM wording does not start a new scan; changing the scope, the post or the keywords does.
Where other tools beat theZio
- Old DMs too. Zorcha says its Re Run covers older messages as well as comments. theZio's scan covers comments only.
- Full backlog on a cheaper plan. theZio's Free plan goes back 24 hours; the full backlog needs Pro. If your Reel went viral a week ago, Free will not reach those fans.
- Story mentions on every plan. ReplyKaro lists story mention DMs on every Instagram plan. theZio answers keyword Story replies on every plan but keeps Story mention DMs on Pro.
- Lowest price. ReplyKaro and QuickDM list lower monthly prices than theZio Pro.
Stop it happening again
- Set the automation up before you post. Pick the post the moment it is live, or use an automation on all posts, so the first comment is already covered.
- Test with a second account. Comment the keyword and check that exactly one DM arrives with the right link.
- Never run two tools on one post. One private reply per comment means one tool fails or the fan gets two DMs.
- Check your evergreen posts. Old Reels that still get comments every week are the easiest wins.
New to all this? Start with how auto DMs work when someone comments, then see the Free and Pro plans or start free.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reply to old Instagram comments automatically?
Yes, with a tool that scans comments posted before the automation was switched on. Comments under 7 days old can still get the DM; older ones can only get a public reply. theZio does this for the last 24 hours on every plan and for all old comments on Pro.
Why can't I DM someone who commented more than 7 days ago?
Meta allows one private reply per comment, and only within 7 days of that comment. After that, no tool can send it. You can still reply publicly under the comment and invite the fan to message you.
Does ManyChat reply to comments made before the automation?
Not according to a moderator on ManyChat's community forum, who says automations cannot act retroactively. That is a forum answer read on 10 October 2026, so confirm with ManyChat if it matters to you.
What is the best tool to reply to old Instagram comments?
There is no single best one. Zorcha lists Re Run on Pro and above, InstantDM lists a re-run of missed comments on higher plans, and theZio, our tool, answers the last 24 hours on every plan and all old comments on Pro. Check each pricing page.
My Reel went viral before I set up automation. What should I do first?
Set up the automation now and switch on old comments, because the 7-day clock is running for every commenter. Keep a public reply on so fans past 7 days still get an answer, then test it with a second account.
Is it safe to DM hundreds of old commenters at once?
Not all at once. Each fan asked, so the DMs are welcome, but a sudden burst is what spam filters look for. Use a tool that paces sends over time. theZio spreads a big scan out and pauses when it hits the hourly limit.
